What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. The most common type is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), caused by the relaxation of throat muscles, which block the airway. This can lead to loud snoring, gasping for air, and disrupted sleep. Left untreated, it increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and daytime fatigue.
The main types of sleep apnea are:
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is the more common type that occurs when muscles in the throat relax and obstruct the flow of air into the lungs.
Central sleep apnea (CSA), which happens when the brain fails to send the proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.
Treatment-emergent central sleep apnea, also called complex sleep apnea, occurs when someone diagnosed with OSA through a sleep study develops CSA after receiving OSA therapy.
Did You Know?
Mild to moderate Sleep Apnea does not require overnight testing at a facility? These tests can be done with an at-home test kit.
These cases often do not require a solution as severe as a CPAP machine (forced air) and can be remedied with a less intrusive solution, such as an oral appliance (Retainers).
Risks of Untreated Sleep Apnea
Cardiovascular Problems: Increased risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks, stroke, and heart failure.
Daytime Fatigue: Excessive daytime sleepiness, which can impair concentration and increase the risk of accidents.
Metabolic Issues: Higher likelihood of developing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
Mental Health Effects: Mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.
Complications in Surgery: Greater risks during surgeries requiring anesthesia due to breathing issues.
Liver Problems: Potential liver function abnormalities.
Treatment Options
Treatment options include lifestyle changes, CPAP machines, Oral appliances, and in some cases, surgery.
